A Brief History
It was June 4th 1910 that this land officially became a country club, however, the efforts started to roll into motion prior. Jenkintown history is abundant and we are happy to be apart of it!
On Feb. 17, 1910 the first officially recorded meeting of a new Golf Club was held and a group of seven men were empowered to obtain an option on 67 acres of land, on Old York Road in Jenkintown, from Abington Friends Meeting.
Buttonholing their friends and acquaintances in Jenkintown, Wyncote, Ogontz, Glenside, Melrose, Elkins Park and Oak Lane, the group committed to the formation of a club that would include a nine-hole, 3,000-yard golf course. A contest to design the club was held and won by Jimmy Lang, former professional at Huntingdon Valley Country Club.
Old York Road Country Club officially opened on June 4, 1910 with putting and driving contests for men and ladies, a baseball game, a reception and tea, and a dinner dance.
In 1962, under obligation to support its expanding school, the trustees of Abington Friends Meeting requested that Old York Road Country Club relocate. The original 18-holes were split, and the current 9-hole course developed into the Foxcroft Country Club.
In 1979, a group led by Ron Jaworski of the Philadelphia Eagles purchased the lease from the Abington Friends and created THE ABINGTON CLUB. The golf course retains much of the original design, as only one new green has been added.
Over the years, the club has played host to a number of prominent guests, including John Philip Sousa, who resided here in 1926 during his engagement at Willow Grove Park. In 1995, The Abington Club was honored to have Bob Hope as a guest while he was visiting the Philadelphia Area.
In 1984, new ownership of The Abington Club was claimed and it began its transformation into the unique, community-based facility that it is today.
The history of this club dates back even further than the 1910’s. In 1697, Quaker John Barnes, of the Barns foundation, put 120 acres of land into the hands of 5 trustees (at the time worth about $175.00) on which to build and maintain a school. The land was part of a grant made by William Penn.
To honor the history and legacy of the club and the community. We now present to you… 1910 Bar and Grille
